Alberto Ginastera, Argentina’s gift to Western art music, gives the imagination a whirl and throws the angelic harp out into the wind. Ginastera’s harp concerto sparkles, crackles, kicks and bites like a habanero of fire, riding the flood of rhythms and songs with the fluttering sails of a gallant gaucho. Sivan Magen, solo harpist with the Radio Symphony Orchestra, keys, slides and drums the scents of Latin America into our noses in a way you can’t feel on postcards.
The young Italian maestro Lorenzo Passerini frames the pampas’ peppery pedals with uninhibited luminosity from his native land: the broad, exuberant joy of Andrea Porta, the warmly emotional confession of Giuseppe Martucci and the pearly, lilting baroque revival of Ottorino Respighi make for a perfect Latin-romantic endorphin work for spring evening.
